About the Course:

This course is a distance learning program designed to teach you how to perform short circuit calculations and perform equipment evaluation.  Many calculation examples are used to illustrate how to perform an analysis.   The methods are based on the IEEE Buff and Red books.  This program is recommended for personnel responsible for the specification, maintenance and operation of power distribution systems such as designers, engineers, and electricians.

Learning Outcomes:

This program will help you apply basic principles to help you:

  • Understand the importance of short circuit calculations.
  • Correctly apply series ratings using circuit breaker and fuses.
  • Determine correct transformer, conductor and motor data for use in the calculations.
  • Perform simplified as well as detailed short circuit calculations.
  • Perform analysis of device interrupting ratings.
